Philip Goddard, further information
Philip Goddard was born in Birmingham. He moved to London to attend Chelsea School of Art and later the Slade School.
Goddard's early work was on paper and loose canvas on a large scale. These pieces were abstract in form and design where colour
and shape were the prominent focus. Goddard moved to a studio on the bank of the Thames in the early 1980's and it is here that
he first began to incorporate construction into his work. The materials for his pieces were washed up scrap and wood which he then
combined with colour to create unique and striking structures.
The landscapes that Goddard is producing today began when he moved to Kent. Each construction is an amalgamation of various
landscapes observed on a continuous journey. The constructions are not still, they are a continual progression! Each landscape
is a snapshot of various scenes that recall the essence and mood of a moment. They work in much the same way as the memory,
relying upon the colour, structure and imagery to invoke the specific space and time.
