Sir Peter Blake RA
The ‘Father of British Pop Art’, Peter Blake was born in Kent in 1932. He began his art studies at
Gravesend Technical College then, after serving with the RAF for two years, he attended the Royal
College of Art from which he graduated in 1956 and later became a tutor. From early in his career
Blake employed the use of collage and pop imagery to create his distinctive pieces. During the
1960’s he gained international renown as a leading exponent of Pop Art, most famous for his 1967
iconic album cover for the Beatles’ Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. Blake has received
many accolades including a Knighthood in 2005; his work is held in numerous international collections.
The Venice Suite
The Venice Suite is Blake’s most recent series and was produced in response to his experience of
the city during his visit to the Venice Biennale in 2007. Each silkscreen print in the series
depicts a fantastical, fairytale scene set in Italy’s historic ‘floating’ city against backdrops
of stunning blues, moody greys and muted yellows. Blake’s trademark collage style is used to
beautiful effect as he combines a wealth of imagery collected from the “treasure-trove” of material
he found in Venice itself. Vintage postcards and book illustrations, photographs and Renaissance
master-paintings are combined with such diverse imagery as wild African animals, wartime bombers and
icebergs. The result, in our opinion, is the finest suite of prints Blake has ever produced!
