The White Room Gallery is proud to present "White Room Dark Room". The gallery's first photography
exhibition showcases two contrasting modern photographers, Bill Jackson and Ray Spence. The
show will also feature The White Room's new range of "Dark Room" photography, a collection of images
by our in-house photographers.
Artist Information
Bill Jackson
Bill Jackson was born in 1953 in the West Midlands somewhere near Wolverhampton. His mother,
Gigiola Truferelli, came to England from Italy after the Second World War and his grandparents,
Fernando Truferelli and Maria Persi-Proietti were noted artisans in Perugia. He graduated from
Coventry School of Art and Birmingham University and taught photography, film and multi media in
various art schools in the UK until 2005.
An important part of his teaching was his work as an artist. In 1986 he moved away from film based materials to explore ideas in video and electronic media and was one of the first of the British photographers at the time to do so. That work was shown at the National Museum of Photography in Bradford in 1991, as part of a symposium on the future of photography in the digital age, hosted by Colin Ford, Zelda Cheatle and Paul Hill.
Ray Spence
Ray Spence originally trained as a Microbiologist having gained his degree at University College, London. His career as a commercial / fine art photographer and an educator has run in tandem and he is now a full time lecturer in photography and digital imaging at Birmingham City University.
For thirty years Ray has specialised in Fine Art Monochrome printing and alternative printing processes. He now works exclusively in digital imaging and produces fine art digital prints using the latest archival inks and papers. His work reflects his interest in natural forms especially the body, and the minutiae of life.
Ray's work is held in many private collections in the UK and the USA and the Permanent Collection of The Royal Photographic Society at The National Media Museum, Bradford. He is a Fellow of The Royal Photographic Society and is the Chairman of the Visual Arts Panel.
