Lionel Friedland studied Architecture at the University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg; following his graduation he embarked on his career and became an established architect based in London until his retirement in 2000. After his retirement, Friedland began to draw and discovered a deep passion and notable talent for art.
Friedland's artistic style is bold and visually powerful: typically composed of intersecting vivid white lines over a strong block colour, a technique reminiscent of his architectural plans and blueprints. With subject matter ranging from the human figure to the Sydney Opera House, his abstract works form a harmonious balance between shape and space; striking lines and cascading curves create dream-like images depicting 3-D structures.
Friedland now resides in Bristol where he continues to make drawings and prints. He has exhibited in a number of shows and his reputation continues to grow. The White Room Gallery is pleased to present a selection of the artist's latest screen-prints.
