William Tillyer, Artist biography
William Tillyer is one of Britain's most respected artists and a leading figure of Contemporary Landscape Painting. Born in Middlesborough in 1938, Tillyer moved to London in 1960 to study art at the Slade School of Art under the tutelage of William Coldstream and Anthony Goss. After graduating he was awarded a Scholarship to study gravure under William Hayter at Atelier 17, Paris.
Tillyer acknowledges that painting has long been regarded as a form of deception as well as a means of disclosing the nature of reality. His work takes this concept a step further; combining the visual and conceptual. The resulting images are narratives which offer you a means to sort through the mélange of visual effects and historic references.
Tillyer has travelled extensively throughout his career, making bodies of work in response to the geographies and cultures he visits; he has been awarded numerous residencies and commissions and is the subject of major monograph "Against the Grain" by art critic Norbert Lynton. In 1998 he was nominated for the Jerwood Prize and his work is held in many major art collections including The Tate Gallery and The Victoria and Albert Museum, both in London, and MOMA, New York.
Our exhibition features twelve limited edition prints of his most striking landscape paintings from the last thirty five years.
